Bosasa Gavin Watson - Being A Global Citizen
The idea of being a global citizen has been in the news a great deal lately, driven by the likes of leaders of the European Community. Locally the esteemed Clem Sunter has taken up the cudgels of this worthy exercise but he is also actively promoting the idea worldwide, that we should select our international partners for the right reasons . The current belief is that that every country and company in the world may have a role to play in sustainable development if careful thought is applied. This applies even to SMMEs. Of course the will must be there too. Many are summonsed by the clarion call though few are chosen. Companies are becoming more and more selective about their partnerships asking themselves discrete questions: do they share our corporate values and will our ethos meet on the same page?
It comes as no surprise, now that the criteria for global citizenship have been announced that we, the Bosasa Group of Companies can call ourselves true ‘global citizens’. We have ably demonstrated that we fulfil all the criteria set by the European Millennium Conference on Global Citizenship.
What is also clear is that as we choose global partners, whether it be for benchmarks, best practises, innovation or trade, we know that they enter the partnership with us for the right reasons. The partnerships go beyond economic alliances into a genuine desire to make a contribution at multiple levels: the environment, investment in communities, people development, poverty alleviation and knowledge sharing, to name a few. Even Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) today and bi lateral treaties (BITS) are insisting that these factors are incorporated. So it seems as if there is a new worldwide consciousness. Our partners in turn know that we have delivered on or side of the bargain. We did not do it because we wished to become global citizens. We did it because it was the right thing to do.
So when you see that we have engaged with global partners, know that we have all come to the table with a common goal and measurable purpose. Every one of our chosen partners may be bringing much needed expertise to the table, but know they too are global citizens.
